Our work with Fareshare in tackling food waste

28 Jan 2025

During 2025 we continue to work with Fareshare which provides access to surplus food from local supermarkets.  The food can no longer be sold by them for a variety of reasons, such as damaged packaging or a short-shelf life.

Food available often includes bread, eggs and fresh fruit and vegetables. In the 90 days leading up to Christmas 2024 we were grateful to receive over 2000kg of donated food.

This surplus food that would otherwise go to landfill, is collected from the retailer and delivered to UpFront by our team of fantastic volunteers. The food is then made available for free in UpFront to support our local community.

We also make it into cost-effective recipes requiring minimal fuss.  These are prepared and demonstrated at our weekly 'Recipe Swap'  in our UpFront community space every Thursday afternoon.  We offer tastings to help people learn to cook from scratch and try new recipes.
