Community Car Scheme reaches record membership

25 Mar 2025

We're celebrating the success of one of our longest-established services with membership numbers for the Community Car Scheme now over 700 local people.

For an annual fee of £20 members can call on the service to arrange transport to get to their health, social and welfare-related appointments. It also helps many people to carry on shopping independently. Volunteers use their own cars to provide the service and scheme members reimburse the drivers by paying 45p per mile to cover fuel costs.

Every month, our volunteer drivers undertake over 600 journeys and as demand for the scheme continues to rise, so does the demand for additional volunteers. To meet the increasing need we are looking to recruit new drivers. The amount of time our volunteer drivers give is entirely flexible – some like fixed days/times, others like to volunteer as and when they can.   For residents of Northallerton, Bedale and surrounding villages, the Car Scheme can be a lifeline in helping to maintain independence and quality of life. If you enjoy a chat, have a car and time at your disposal and would like to make a real difference to local residents, we would love to hear from you. We also have lots of other volunteering opportunities for those who don’t like driving or don’t have a car.

To find out more, call Claire Barnbrook who co-ordinates the scheme. Get in touch with us either by phone on 01609 780458 or by email volunteering@hambletoncommunity.org
